From Idea To Finished Recording

Have you ever worked really hard on your newest track, but gotten completely stuck somewhere in the process, feeling like you’ve met a brick wall? Maybe you just could not come up with an idea for the next song section, had struggles getting the orchestral samples sounding realistic enough, or pulled your hair out while struggling for hours trying to get the mix right. Or the worst thing: Spending thousands of dollars on equipment and samples, and hundreds hours watching tutorials, without getting your music to sound the way you want. No matter what you do, you just cannot seem to make your music sound nearly as good as the professional tracks out there... Does this sound familiar?

My Story

I have for sure been there. Years ago, when I bought my first sampling libraries, I had nobody to teach me. Even though I had been making pop and rock music for years, my cinematic orchestral tracks sounded like garbage. So I went the long road of trial and error, watched online tutorials for hours, and spent all my money on new libraries, because I was blaming my old equipment for not getting the results I wanted. But no matter how hard I tried, when I compared my newest track to a professional one, it sounded completely horrible. I wanted to give up...

But, in the end, I spent some additional thousands of dollars beginning to study the art of composing for the orchestra at Berklee Online, as well as getting personal mentoring from some of the best people in the industry. I realized a lot of things, and learned quite a few secret tricks. That’s when things started to turn around. It wasn’t the equipment that held me back, but my knowledge. And I assure you, it was some years of frustration and lack of motivation before I saw the light in the end of the tunnel. But it does not have to be this way for you.

The Problem

There are a lot of music courses out there. However, as far as I’ve seen, very few of them are pointed towards the independent cinematic music composer. You’ll find hit songwriting tips, EDM and House music mixing tutorials and courses on mastering your rock, indie or pop tracks. However, it’s hard to find information on how to write epic trailer music, cinematic film scores, action cues for games or soaring love themes for the orchestra. Even worse is that such tutorials usually only cover one of the aspects of the process. Because as an independent composer, you will very likely have to do everything yourself. The composition, the arrangement, the recording, mixing and mastering. It goes without saying that attending a pop melody writing masterclass, watching a video on how to mix your new dance track and buying an expensive course on how to master your music is probably not the easiest or most effective way to go…

This is the problem I had for years, and now have tried to solve by writing this course. Who Am I?

My name is Arn Andersson, a Berklee Online alumni, full time musician and composer for the LA-based company C21FX. I am the man behind the website Composing Secrets, where I teach independent composers worldwide how to write, arrange and produce epic and cinematic music. The past months I have been working on putting the essence of my knowledge and years of experience into a brand new course, called «From Idea To Finished Recording».

Composition

Here I will guide you through all the four families of the orchestra, the strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion. In this chapter, you will be introduced to each of the most common instruments of the entire orchestra, their roles, tone colors, and how they are used.

Here you will be taught the possibilities and limitations of each instrument, as well as how you can use them effectively in your compositions. You will be given templates and ideas for orchestral set-ups, so you can start composing for the orchestra within minutes.

Next, I will reveal an extremely effective technique for orchestrating your composition, that I use all the time, and speeds up your workflow in the studio. And you don’t even need to know music theory or how to read notes!

Production

This is probably one of the most challenging parts, as theory only gets you so far in this field. That is why I have included 4 videos, showing you how to apply all the information you learn in these chapters, so you will be able to produce great sounding music right away.

Here you will be guided through the process of recording, editing, mixing and mastering your track. Any DAW and software can be used, but the lessons will be demonstrated in Cubase 7.
