A FUNK ICON: THE D6 CLAVINET

MODIFIED FOR SAMPLING BY SONICCOUTURE

Hohner D6s are getting quite rare, because of their delicate, high-maintenance mechanical nature. Over a 12 month period we extensively restored and then modified our D6, which was a nice example in decent working order before we even started. But to get these instruments functioning absolutely perfectly is a real labour of love.

As well as wanting to get it sounding perfect, we also needed to make a few custom modifications. To model the internal setup of the instrument, we added a direct XLR output to record each pickup separately, and an input to the D6 preamp in order to capture the EQ response.
The switching added for this output can be seen in the pictures above.

THE INSTRUMENT PANEL

The main Instrument panel contains the traditional D6 rocker switches for setting the preamp and pickup phase positions. In the lower half of the panel there are dynamic low pass filter and envelope controls, and the D6 mute slider.

THE SUPER CLAV PANEL

Opening up the Clav preamp panel reveals a selection of controls not found on the hardware D6 ; pickup gainand pan knobs, as well as a direct out gain control.

THE OPTIONS PANEL

The options panels provides full control over velocity curves and response, so you can tailor it exactly to your needs. The Key-off level control is found here. There are also a selection of preferences for memory management, key range, font colour, etc.

THE EFFECTS PANEL

The comprehensive effects section features Auto-wah, auto-pan, chorus, phaser, delay and convolution reverb with custom effects. The wah-wah effect can be assigned to a MIDI controller, so you can use it with a pedal for ultimate realism. In the lower section there is amp-simulation, EQ, overdrive and compression.
